More Than a Man
1 John 1:1–4 (ESV)
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life—
the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us—
that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us;
and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.
And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.

¿Qué harías si te dieras cuenta de que llevas años creyendo en una versión de Jesús que no es el verdadero?

What would you do if you realized you had spent years believing in a version of Jesus that wasn’t the real one?

Hoy en día, casi todo el mundo tiene una opinión sobre Jesús. Algunos lo ven como un sabio, otros como un activista, un sanador, un símbolo de amor.
Incluso dentro de la iglesia, muchos tienen una imagen de Jesús moldeada más por la cultura o sus emociones que por la verdad revelada.
Pero aquí está la pregunta más importante:
¿Conoces al verdadero Jesús? ¿Al Verbo de Vida?

Introduction:
Today, almost everyone has an opinion about Jesus. Some see Him as a wise man, others as an activist, a healer, a symbol of love.
Even within the church, many have an image of Jesus shaped more by culture or emotion than by revealed truth.
But here’s the most important question:
Do you know the real Jesus? The Word of Life?

Juan nos escribe como alguien que no escuchó de Jesús por tradición…
sino que lo oyó, lo vio con sus propios ojos, lo tocó con sus propias manos.
Él vivió con Él, lo siguió, lo vio morir… y lo vio resucitar.

Y lo que Juan quiere dejar claro desde el principio es esto:
Jesús es más que un hombre.
Es el Hijo eterno, la vida misma hecha carne.
Y solo Él puede darnos comunión real y gozo duradero.

John writes to us not as someone who heard about Jesus through tradition…
but as someone who heard Him, saw Him with his own eyes, and touched Him with his own hands.
He lived with Him, followed Him, saw Him die… and saw Him rise.

And what John wants to make absolutely clear from the very beginning is this:
Jesus is more than a man.
He is the eternal Son, life itself made flesh.
And only He can give us true fellowship and lasting joy.

And with all of this in mind, here’s the truth I want us to hold on to today.

Only Jesus, the eternal Son, gives us true fellowship and lasting joy.

Write it down, repeat it, and hold it close to your heart.:

Cada uno de estos puntos nos va a ayudar a ver que Jesús no es simplemente otra figura religiosa.
Él es el Hijo eterno: revelado en carne, proclamado por testigos,
y la fuente de vida eterna para todos los que confían en Él.

Each of these points will help us see that Jesus isn’t just another religious figure.
He is the eternal Son — revealed in the flesh, proclaimed by witnesses,
and the source of eternal life for everyone who trusts in Him.

1. El Verbo de Vida Revelado (vv. 1–2) 

Escuchemos cómo lo dice el apóstol Juan en los primeros dos versículos de esta carta:

1 Lo que existía desde el principio, lo que hemos oído, lo que hemos visto con nuestros propios ojos, lo que hemos contemplado y lo que han tocado nuestras manos, esto escribimos acerca del Verbo de vida. ² Y la vida se manifestó. Nosotros la hemos visto, y damos testimonio y les anunciamos a ustedes la vida eterna que estaba con el Padre y se manifestó a nosotros.

1. The Word of Life Revealed (vv. 1–2)

Let’s hear how the apostle John opens his letter in the first two verses:
1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word^[a] of life— ² the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us

Hermanos, Juan comienza Seguro.
Él no está hablando de ideas o rumores. Él está hablando de una Persona real.
De alguien que él conoció, escuchó, vio con sus propios ojos y tocó con sus propias manos.

Imagínate por un momento que Juan fuera tu amigo, tu vecino, alguien con quien trabajas…Y él te dice con convicción:
“Yo caminé con Jesús. Yo lo vi hacer milagros. Yo lo escuché enseñar. Yo estuve ahí.”

¿Lo tomarías en serio?

Brothers and sisters, John starts strong.
He’s not talking about ideas or rumors. He’s talking about a real Person—
someone he knew, heard, saw with his own eyes, and touched with his own hands.

Imagine for a moment that John was your friend, your neighbor, someone you work with… And he tells you with conviction:
“I walked with Jesus. I saw Him perform miracles. I heard Him teach. I was there.”

Would you take him seriously?

Este no es un mensaje nuevo para Juan. Él está siendo coherente.
Lo que él escribió en su evangelio, lo sigue creyendo con todo el corazón:
“En el principio era el Verbo…” (Juan 1:1)
“Y el Verbo se hizo carne…” (Juan 1:14)

Y ahora, años después, el mensaje sigue igual:
y para Juan Jesús no es simplemente un maestro o un ejemplo a quien seguir…

This is not a new message for John. He’s being consistent.
What he wrote in his gospel, he still believes with all his heart:
“In the beginning was the Word...” (John 1:1)
“And the Word became flesh...” (John 1:14)

And now, years later, the message is still the same:
and for john Jesus is not just a teacher or an example to follow…
He Is The Word of Life…...The Eternal life revealed.

Juan no está hablando de un símbolo religioso o de una figura que nos hace sentir bien…
Está hablando de la realidad más gloriosa del universo:
Que Dios se hizo hombre y vivió entre nosotros.

No fue por curiosidad……No fue por obligación……Fue por amor.

John isn’t talking about a religious symbol or a figure that makes us feel good…
He’s talking about the most glorious reality in the universe:
That God became man and lived among us.

Not out of curiosity……Not out of obligation……But out of love.

Jesús se hizo carne, no para “ver cómo vivimos” …
sino para vivir la vida que nosotros no pudimos vivir
y morir la muerte que nosotros merecíamos.
El Verbo no bajó en forma de rayo ni en un trono de oro,
sino en carne humana—frágil, limitada, como tú y como yo.
Pero sin pecado.
Y lo hizo para reconciliarnos con el Padre, para caminar con nosotros,
para cargar con nuestros pecados en la cruz, y darnos vida eterna.

Jesus became flesh, not to “see how we live”…
but to live the life we could not live
and die the death we deserved.
The Word did not descend in lightning or on a throne of gold,
but in human flesh—fragile and limited, like you and me.
Yet without sin.And He did it to reconcile us to the Father, to walk with us,
to carry our sins on the cross, and to give us eternal life.

Hebreos 2:14–17 dice:
“Por tanto, ya que los hijos comparten carne y sangre, Él también participó de lo mismo…”
“…a fin de ser un Sumo Sacerdote misericordioso y fiel… para hacer propiciación por los pecados del pueblo.”

Queriendo decir, Cristo se hizo como nosotros para salvarnos. El eterno se volvió temporal.
El infinito se hizo tocable…. El Verbo se hizo carne…
Para que tú y yo podamos ser hechos hijos de Dios.

Hebrews 2:14–17 says:
“Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things...”
“...that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest… to make propitiation for the sins of the people.”

Meaning, Christ became like us to save us…...The eternal became temporal.
The infinite became touchable…. The Word became flesh…
So that you and I could become children of God.

Transición:
Hermanos, cuando alguien experimenta algo tan real, tan transformador, no puede quedarse callado.
Juan no solamente vio a Jesús… él fue transformado por Él.
Y por eso, lo que recibió, ahora lo anuncia.

Su experiencia con el Verbo de vida no fue algo privado ni secreto.
Fue una verdad tan gloriosa que tenía que ser proclamada.

Y eso nos lleva a nuestro segundo punto…

Transition:
Brothers and sisters, when someone experiences something so real, so life-transforming, they can’t stay silent.
John didn’t just see Jesus… he was transformed by Him.
And so what he received, he now declares.

His experience with the Word of Life wasn’t something private or secret.
It was a truth so glorious it had to be proclaimed.

And that brings us to our second point…

2. El Verbo Proclamado (v. 3)
“Lo que hemos visto y oído les proclamamos también a ustedes,
para que también ustedes tengan comunión con nosotros.
En verdad nuestra comunión es con el Padre y con Su Hijo Jesucristo.”

2. The Word Proclaimed (v. 3)
“That which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you,
so that you too may have fellowship with us;
and indeed, our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.”

Ilustración:
Imagina que descubres la cura para una enfermedad incurable.
Algo que puede restaurar la vida de miles de personas.

¿La guardarías en secreto?
¿Te quedarías callado sabiendo que otros podrían vivir si tú hablas?

Eso es lo que Juan siente.
Él no descubrió una medicina…. sino que conoció al Autor de la vida,
al Verbo hecho carne, al único que puede reconciliar al ser humano con Dios.

Y por eso Juan proclama lo que ha visto y oído,
no por obligación…sino porque ama a Dios y ama a los demás.

Imagine you discover the cure for an incurable disease—
something that could restore the lives of thousands.

Would you keep it to yourself?
Would you stay quiet knowing others could live if you spoke?

That’s what John feels.
He didn’t discover a medicine—Rather He met the Author of Life,
the Word made flesh, the only One who can reconcile humanity to God.

And so, John proclaims what he has seen and heard,
not out of obligation…...but because he loves God and loves others.

No es un mensaje privado
La fe cristiana no es algo que se guarda para uno mismo.
Juan (NO) dice:
“Yo vi todo esto, ¡y qué bendición para mí!”

No. Él dice:
“Eso les anunciamos a ustedes…”

Él entendió que esta verdad gloriosa—que el Hijo eterno se hizo carne—
no puede quedarse callado.
Tiene que ser Proclamado.

It is not a Private Message
The Christian faith is not something to keep to yourself.
John doesn’t say:
“I saw all of this—what a blessing for me!”

No. He says:
“That which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you…”

He understood that this glorious truth—
that the eternal Son took on flesh—
cannot be kept to ourselves.
It must be proclaimed.

¿Por qué lo proclama?
“…para que también ustedes tengan comunión con nosotros.”

El propósito de compartir este mensaje no es solo informar…
sino invitar.

Invitar a una comunión real:

• Con otros creyentes

• Y, más importante aún: con Dios mismo

Pero aquí está la advertencia implícita:
La comunión con Dios no es posible sin el verdadero Cristo.
No podemos tener una relación con el Padre si no reconocemos al Hijo tal como ha sido revelado. Esto es lo que Juan quiere que su audiencia entienda:
No se puede tener verdadera comunión con Dios sin abrazar al Cristo verdadero.

Why Does He Proclaim It?
“…so that you too may have fellowship with us.”

The purpose of sharing this message isn’t just to inform…
It’s to invite.

To invite people into real fellowship:

• With other believers

• And most importantly—with God Himself

But here’s the implied warning:
Fellowship with God is not possible without the real Christ.
You can’t have a relationship with the Father
if you don’t embrace the Son as He has been revealed.

This is what John wants his audience to understand:
You cannot have true fellowship with God without embracing the true Christ.

Aplicación:
Esto también es para nosotros hoy.
Muchos en nuestros días hablan de Jesús,
pero lo hacen a su manera.

Lo ven como un ejemplo moral, un sanador, un coach espiritual…
pero no como el Hijo eterno encarnado.

Esa distorsión no solo cambia la imagen de Cristo…
nos separa de la verdadera comunión.

Application:
And this is for us today, too.
Many in our day talk about Jesus,
but they do it on their terms.

They see Him as a moral example, a healer, a spiritual coach…
but not as the eternal Son made flesh.

That distortion doesn’t just change how we view Christ—
it separates us from true fellowship.

Entonces pregunto:
¿Tu Jesús luce como el que los apóstoles proclamaron? 

¿O es un Jesús a tu medida?

Hermanos, no se trata de cuánto sabes, sino de a quién conoces. 

Y si aún no conoces al verdadero Cristo, la invitación está abierta.
Porque Solo el Jesús revelado y proclamado en las Escrituras
puede darnos comunión con Dios.

So let me ask you:
Does your Jesus look like the One the apostles proclaimed? 

Or is He a Jesus made in your own image?

"Brothers and sisters, it's not about how much you know, but about whom you know. 

And if you don't yet know the true Christ, the invitation is open."
Because only the Jesus revealed and proclaimed in the Scriptures
can give us true fellowship with God.

Transición:
Iglesia, Amigos Juan no proclamó este mensaje para impresionar, ni para debatir—
sino para invitar a otros a entrar en la misma comunión que él ahora disfruta con Dios.

Y esa comunión no es fría ni formal…
Es una comunión llena de gozo.

Porque cuando conoces al verdadero Jesús—
el Hijo eterno, el Verbo hecho carne—
no solo recibes verdad… recibes gozo.

No un gozo superficial o pasajero,
sino un gozo profundo, duradero…que transforma la vida entera.

Y eso nos lleva a nuestro tercer y último punto:

Transition:
Church, Friends
John didn’t proclaim this message to impress or to debate—
but to invite others into the same fellowship he now enjoys with God.

And that fellowship is not cold or formal…
It’s filled with joy.

Because when you know the real Jesus—
the eternal Son, the Word made flesh—
you don’t just receive truth… you receive joy…Not a shallow, passing joy,
but a deep, lasting joy that transforms your entire life.

And that brings us to our third and final point:

3. El Verbo que da Gozo

. 4 Les escribimos estas cosas para que nuestro gozo sea completo

Ilustración:
Piensa en una familia separada por años… quizá por guerra, distancia o tragedia.
Y un día, inesperadamente, se reencuentran.
Se miran. Se abrazan. Lloran. Se alegran.
Una alegría que no viene de cosas materiales ni de circunstancias favorables…
sino de una relación restaurada.

3. The Word Who Gives Joy

Verse 4: “And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.”

Illustration:
Imagine a family separated for years …maybe by war, distance, or tragedy.
And one day, unexpectedly, they reunite.
They see each other. They embrace. They cry. They rejoice.
A joy that doesn’t come from material things or favorable circumstances…
but from a restored relationship.

Y Así es el gozo que Juan describe aquí.
No se trata de emoción superficial o de una felicidad pasajera.
Se trata de algo mucho más profundo:

• El gozo de conocer al Hijo eterno.

• El gozo de tener comunión con el Padre.

• El gozo de saber que no estás perdido…sino reconciliado con Dios.

And That’s the kind of joy John is talking about here.
Not surface-level excitement or temporary happiness.
But something much deeper:

• The joy of knowing the eternal Son.

• The joy of having fellowship with the Father.

• The joy of knowing you’re not lost… but reconciled to God.

Iglesia, amigos Juan no escribe para impresionar… escribe para edificar.
Y su deseo es claro: que tú y yo experimentemos gozo completo.

Esto no es emocionalismo.
El gozo que viene de Cristo no depende de cómo amaneció el día o si todo va bien en casa o en el trabajo.

Este gozo está anclado en una Persona:
Jesús, el Verbo de vida.

Es por eso que Juan insiste tanto en que conozcamos al Jesús verdadero.
Porque si distorsionamos a Cristo, perdemos el gozo que solo Él puede dar.

Church, friends John doesn’t write to impress—he writes to build us up.
And his desire is clear: that you and I would experience complete joy.

This isn’t emotionalism.
The joy that comes from Christ doesn’t depend on how the day started or if everything at home or work is going well.

This joy is anchored in a Person:
Jesus, the Word of Life.

That’s why John insists so much that we know the true Jesus.
Because if we distort Christ, we miss out on the joy that only He can give.

Aplicación:
Muchos buscan el gozo en:

• experiencias espirituales intensas,

• emociones momentáneas,

• o incluso en una imagen manipulada de Jesús que se acomode a sus deseos.

Pero Juan nos dice:
El gozo duradero nace de una verdad segura:
Que el Verbo se hizo carne… y vino por nosotros.

¿Estás buscando gozo en las circunstancias… o en Cristo?
¿Tienes el gozo que viene de una comunión real con Dios?

Esto no se trata de ser religioso ni de portarse bien.
Se trata de confiar en Aquel que vivió por ti, murió por ti, y resucitó para darte vida eterna.

Application:
Many people today search for joy in:

• intense spiritual experiences,

• fleeting emotions,

• or even a manipulated image of Jesus that fits their preferences.

But John reminds us:
Lasting joy is born from a solid truth—
That the Word became flesh… and came for us.

Are you searching for joy in your circumstances… or in Christ?
Do you have the joy that comes from real fellowship with God?

This isn’t about being religious or behaving well.
It’s about trusting the One who lived for you, died for you, and rose again to give you eternal life.

Conclusión

Si conoces al verdadero Jesús, entonces este gozo es tuyo.
Y si aún no lo conoces, la invitación sigue abierta:
Ven al Verbo de vida. Recibe el gozo que no se acaba.

Porque Jesús no es una figura del pasado, ni una idea religiosa.

Él es el Hijo eterno, el Verbo de vida, más que un hombre…
Y hoy, Él te llama a una comunión real y a un gozo completo.

Conclusion

If you know the real Jesus, then this joy is yours.
And if you don’t know Him yet, the invitation is still open:
Come to the Word of Life. Receive the joy that never ends.

Because Jesus is not a figure of the past, nor a religious idea.

He is the eternal Son, the Word of Life—more than a man...
And today, He is calling you to real fellowship and lasting joy.

Abraza al Jesús verdadero… y conoce la vida que nunca se acaba.

Embrace the true Jesus… and know the life that never ends.

Pregunta Final

¿Estás viviendo con el gozo que viene de conocer al verdadero Jesús?
¿O has estado siguiendo una imagen distorsionada de Él, una que no puede darte comunión ni gozo verdadero?

Hoy, escucha el llamado del Verbo de vida.
No te alejes. No te conformes con menos.
Ven al Cristo verdadero… y recibe la vida eterna.

Closing Question

Are you living with the joy that comes from knowing the real Jesus?
Or have you been following a distorted image of Him—one that can’t offer you true fellowship or lasting joy?

Today, listen to the call of the Word of Life.
Don’t Walk away. Don’t settle for less.
Come to the true Christ… and receive eternal life.

Señor Jesús,
Gracias por revelarte como el Verbo de vida.
Gracias por venir, morir por nuestros pecados,
y resucitar para darnos vida eterna.
Perdónanos por buscar gozo en otras cosas
y por aceptar versiones falsas de quién eres.

Lord Jesus,
Thank You for revealing Yourself as the Word of Life.
Thank You for coming, for dying for our sins,
and for rising again to give us eternal life.
Forgive us for seeking joy in other things
and for believing false versions of who You are.
Open our eyes to see You,
and our hearts to receive You by faith.
We want to know You, walk with You,
and enjoy the fellowship and joy that only You can give.
Today we affirm:
You are more than a man —
You are the eternal Son of God,
and in You is true life.
