A Commission Backed By God | Joshua 1:1-9

Theme: God’s calling is always accompanied by His faithful presence and support.

Joshua 1 marks a new beginning for Israel after the death of Moses. The challenge is real and fear is natural, but God’s work does not depend on human strength—it rests on His faithfulness. Before commanding Joshua to move forward, God assures him of His presence.

1. The Challenge Is Real; Fear Is Imminent (Josh. 1:1–4)

Israel faces uncertainty, strong enemies, and a transition in leadership. God reaffirms His covenant and declares His sovereignty, showing that unbelief—not opposition—is the greatest obstacle.

2. God Promises His Absolute Support (Josh. 1:5–6)

God promises never to leave or forsake Joshua. This assurance is rooted in God’s covenant faithfulness, not Joshua’s ability, and ultimately points to Christ.

3. Faith and Obedience Are Required (Josh. 1:7–9)

Obedience flows from God’s promise, not as a means to earn it. True rest is found in Christ, who fulfilled the Law perfectly and invites all to rest in Him.

Conclusion: Believers are called to step forward in faith, trusting God’s presence amid uncertainty. Courage grows by resting in God’s sovereignty and faithfulness fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
