Jesus, the Kingdom and Our Response | Mark 1:1-15
Introduction
The passage explains how Mark begins his gospel by presenting “the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ,” revealing that Jesus is the promised Messiah whose coming requires a response of repentance and faith. Mark shows four movements in 1:1–15:
1. The promise announced: God had already promised the Savior’s coming, and Mark connects this to the Old Testament.
2. The Messiah prepared: John the Baptist fulfills prophecy and calls the people to repentance to receive the Messiah.
3. The Son confirmed: At Jesus’ baptism, God Himself declares Him the beloved Son, and the Spirit leads Him into the wilderness.
4. The Kingdom proclaimed: Jesus begins His ministry proclaiming that God’s Kingdom has arrived and calling everyone to respond with repentance and faith.
Conclusion
God’s rescue plan is not improvised; it unfolds according to His promises and points to Jesus as the Savior who transforms lives. Discipleship starts by trusting what God has revealed about His Son.
